Rostov has many sights, which attract tourists. The Rostov Kremlin is one of the popular sights. The architecture of the Kremlin is really unique and fascinating. The Rostov Kremlin was built not as a fortress, but as a residence of the local head of church.
The Borisoglebsky monastery is situated 18 km from Rostov. The monastery was founded in the 14th century by two monks, supporters of St. Sergiy. It is believed that St. Sergiy himself pointed the place of the monastery. The monastery was often visited by Russian princes and tsars. Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible visited the monastery three times. He made more than twenty donations to the monastery.
Beginning from 1994 the Borisoglebsky monastery began to revive. Nowadays it is not only a male monastery, but also a branch of the “Rostov Kremlin” museum-sanctuary.
Uspensky Cathedral was built in the 16th century. It is one of the rare cathedrals, which are open for the visitors only during services. The belfry of the Uspensky cathedral has 15 bells, the toll of which is heard twenty kilometers away.
