Most of the Karelian towns and cities were founded in the past centuries and have numerous architectural and historical sights. Some of the towns were founded in the 15th century, so the region is closely connected with the history of the Medieval Rus.

Novgorod

Novgorod is the oldest city in Russia and one of the best destinations for Russia tours. You will find there many historical and cultural monuments, which are of great value. The history of Novgorod dates back to the 9th century. At that time Novgorod was the most important political center for Slavic and Finno-Uric tribes.

Novgorod was the major city of Russia, which was closely connected with the  main historical events in the country. Scandinavian Prince Ruric ruled over Novgorodians for more than 750 years. Novgorodians themselves invited him, as they needed a good and wise ruler.

After adoption of Christianity, Novgorod turned into a powerful ecclesiastical center of Russia. Unfortunately, during World War II the city was turned into ruins, but Novgorodians reconstructed the destroyed parts. Nevertheless, many of the monuments of the past survived from destruction.

The church of Annunciation is one of the rare remnants of the past. The church was built to commemorate the miracle of the icon “Our Lady of the Sign”. The church was constructed in the 12th century only in 70 days.

One of the finest examples of the 15th century architecture is the Church of Peter and Paul in Kozhevniki. The façade of the church has many decorative elements. The icons from this church are preserved in the Historical Museum of Novgorod.

One of the most ancient temples in Novgorod is the Church of Transfiguration of our Savior on Ilyina street.  As the legend says the famous icon “ Our Lady of the Sign” was kept there. The church represents the 14th century architectural style in Novgorod.

I recommend visiting Novgorod on a Russian river cruise. Alternatively, you can get a Russian train ticket or one of flights to Russia.

Kostroma

Kostroma is one of the most beautiful city in Russia. The city is as old as Moscow. It was founded in 1152 by Yuri Dolgorukiy. Like many other cities Koztroma was burned during the Tartar invasion. During the 15th century the city burned to ground for three times. But local population made heroic efforts and very soon the city was reconstructed/

In the 17th century Kostroma became a very important city of Russia. It was the city of craftsmen and merchants. This city became popular in that time for the mastery of such professions as builders, icon painters, tanners and canvas makers.

Kostroma has many historical monuments that date back to the past centuries. The Ipatievsky-Troitzkiy monastery is one of the popular sights in Kostroma. The monastery was founded in 1330. The Tartar prince Chet, who was the founder of the monastery and Ivan Susanin are buried in the monastery. The monastery also houses the “Ipatievsky Monastery” Kostroma historical and architectural museum-sanctuary. The monastery has buildings that are famous all over the world, which are the Green Tower and Troitzky Cathedral.

Another famous monastery is the Bogoyavlensky Monastery founded at the beginning of the 15th century. Nowadays the Bogoyavlensky Monastery is the residence of the current Archbishop of Kostroma.

Kostroma is really one of the most beautiful cities in Russia. You will find different kinds of attractions and surely will enjoy your Russian vacation there. Put Kostroma on your itinerary when you visit Russia, but note there are not very many Russian hotels in Kostroma as it is a small town.

Rostov the Great of Russia

Rostov the Great is one of the oldest towns in Russia. The first records of Rostov date back to the 9th century. In 1070 the city became the center of the Rostov episcopate. By the 16th century Rostov became a very important center of trade in Russia. Rostov was also the city, where prominent icon painters lived. You can see many of these icons now when you travel to Russia.

If you need help with your hotels in Russia, or Russia flights, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Rostov has many sights, which attract tourists. The Rostov Kremlin is one of the popular sights. The architecture of the Kremlin is really unique and fascinating. The Rostov Kremlin was built not as a fortress, but as a residence of the local head of church.

The Borisoglebsky monastery is situated 18 km from Rostov. The monastery was founded in the 14th century by two monks, supporters of St. Sergiy. It is believed that St. Sergiy himself pointed the place of the monastery. The monastery was often visited by Russian princes and tsars. Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible visited the monastery three times. He made more than twenty donations to the monastery.

Beginning from 1994 the  Borisoglebsky monastery began to revive. Nowadays it is not only a male monastery, but also a branch of the “Rostov Kremlin” museum-sanctuary.

Uspensky Cathedral was built in the 16th century. It is one of the rare cathedrals, which are open for the visitors only during services. The belfry of the Uspensky cathedral has 15 bells, the toll of which is heard twenty kilometers away.

Russian Architecture

There are many interesting facts about Russia and when you go on a Russia travel you will explore many fascinating features of this great culture, for example architecture.

Russian architecture has developed through the ages. During the centuries, Russian architecture changed and acquired new forms. Beginning from the 10-th century, when Russian adopted Christianity many great churches were built. Unfortunately, not many of them preserved till our time. If you are a professional architect, a tour to Russia will broaden your horizons.

Architectural monuments belonging to the early Muscovite period, that is the period from the 13-th up to the 16-th centuries also represent great value. This time in the history of Russia is very important as an invasion of Mongolians took lace during this time. Many beautiful buildings were destroyed. Only in Novgorod and Tver you can find some architectural monuments belonging to this period, as these towns were not touched by the invasion. During the reign of Ivan III Italian architects were invited to Russia, so Russian architecture was highly influenced by Italian Renaissance.

The second half of the 16-th century was marked by the development of brick building architecture. One of the famous architectural monuments of that time is the Saint Basil’s Cathedral.

During the time of Peter the Great Dutch style prevailed in the field of Russian architecture. It was the style that Peter the Great favored. First baroque churches were also represented in the 18-th century.

Nowadays Russian architecture is developing rapidly. Tourists making tours in Russia will see there various styles of architecture: old buildings and new ones are mixed. Some Russian cities will take you back to the old times, and the others to the future.
